
How antifouling coatings cut fuel and emissions
Below the waterline, a hull is under constant biological attack. Within days of entering the water, a clean surface starts to collect a slime of bacteria and algae; given time, that slime becomes weed, and weed becomes barnacles. This build-up is called fouling, and it is one of the biggest hidden costs in shipping.
What fouling does to a hull
Fouling roughens the hull and disturbs the flow of water around it. That extra drag has to be overcome by the engine, which means burning more fuel to hold the same speed — or losing speed at the same fuel burn. Even a thin, slimy film measurably increases resistance; a hull carrying hard fouling such as barnacles can raise fuel consumption dramatically.
More fuel means more cost and more emissions. For operators facing tighter efficiency rules and fuel prices that never sit still, hull condition is no longer a cosmetic concern — it is a line on the balance sheet and part of a vessel's environmental footprint.
How antifouling works
Antifouling coatings tackle the problem in different ways, and the right choice depends on how a vessel trades.
Self-polishing antifoulings
These coatings release biocide at a controlled rate as the outer layer gradually wears away in the water, exposing fresh active surface. The polishing action also keeps the hull smooth over the docking interval. They suit vessels with regular activity and a predictable trading pattern.
Hard antifoulings
Hard coatings hold their film and tolerate periods of idleness and mechanical cleaning. They are a common choice where a vessel spends time stationary or is cleaned in service.
Fouling-release systems
Rather than relying on biocide, fouling-release coatings present an ultra-smooth, low-friction surface that fouling struggles to grip; what does attach is released as the vessel moves or is gently cleaned. Their low friction also delivers a fuel benefit in its own right, which is why they appeal to high-activity vessels.
Choosing the right system
There is no single "best" antifouling — only the best fit for a vessel's profile. The key factors are:
- Speed and activity — how fast the vessel travels and how much time it spends under way.
- Docking interval — how long the system has to perform before the next dry docking.
- Operating area — water temperature and fouling pressure vary hugely by region.
- Regulations — local rules on biocides and coatings must be met.
- Fouling increases drag, which raises fuel use and emissions.
- Self-polishing, hard and fouling-release systems each suit different trading patterns.
- Match the system to speed, activity, docking interval and operating area — not to price alone.
- Correct application matters as much as the product; specification and inspection protect the result.
